Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is a way to provide Ethernet based multipoint to multipoint communication over IP/MPLS networks.
In a VPLS, the local area network (LAN) at each site is extended to the edge of the Tier 1 carriers network. The network then emulates a switch to connect all of the customer LANs to create a single bridged LAN.

Private lines or leased lines are a point to point uncontended service with a dedicated permanently available bandwidth. Anything from 2mg to 10gb.
As such they are the most costly service however their very nature also make them the most secure.
The signaling is customer dependant with the management of the circuit being carried out by either the network or the customers own IT staff.

Xtel Europe offer an Ethernet service for customers wishing to invoke an alternative to SDL or Private Lines.
Entry level Ethernet service is Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) and as it is delivered over copper. The uncontended service is limited to 20mb nationwide or 40mb for London
As a consequence of utilizing existing copper circuits it is lower in cost than the Ethernet over fibre offering and quicker to install.
For larger business requiring larger bandwidths the Ethernet over fibre service is available with anything from 10mb to 1gb. The installation has a longer lead time which is also area dependant.
Both scenarios offer a flexible increase or decrease in bandwidth as and when the customer desires.
